Heat pumps consume electricity in order to operate. However as they extract the available heat from either the air or the ground, using the refrigeration process this is converted into usable heat in the home. Today we have equipment available which has an approximate COP of 4.00 meaning you get 4 kw of heat out of the system but only pay for 1 kw of electricity to run it. Heat pumps can reduce the CO2 emissions of the home by up to 40% and the running costs by up to 30%.
Heat pumps use energy stored in the air and convert this to heat for space heating and hot water production. Low temperature energy from the air is collected through a refrigerant cycle, which converts this energy to usable heat for use inside the home.
An air-to-air system produces warm or cool air which is circulated by fan coil units to heat or cool your home. This flexibility means you can heat your home in the winter and as an added benefit of cooling it in the summer.
An air-to-Water system produces heating which is circulated by using either radiators or under floor heating. In addition produces hot water via a heat pump cylinder.
A Ground source heat pump acts in the same way as an air source heat pump but instead of using air as the heat source they use pipes which are buried in the garden to extract heat from the ground. This heat can then be used to heat radiators, under floor or warm air heating systems and hot water in your home.
Solar Thermal harnesses the energy given out by the sun and uses this to give you hot water (Even on cold days) this can save you up to 60% on hot water bills.
